Artist Statement: "My name is Hiro Hubbard; I am from Baltimore Maryland and am currently studying Advertising Design at Ringling College. Although I create work in a variety of mediums spray paint has always been my favorite to work with. The fluidity and quickness of aerosol as well as the ability to blend and colors and tones are qualities that no other kind of paint can provide. Growing up in an urban environment graffiti art has always played a large role in my life. In our culture there are a lot of misconceptions about graffiti art and the majority of the population remains unaware and left to their own speculations. A large misconception is that anything painted with an aerosol can qualifies as graffiti. Although there are various types of street art graffiti is solely defined as the study of letter form and letter structure. If a piece does not contain letters with funk and flow then it does not qualify as graffiti. Graffiti contains a lot of the same principles as other forms of design and is just as technical and meticulous as any other art form. There is a distinct difference between senseless vandalism scrawled in public spaces and an elaborate piece of graffiti art, which an artist must extensively plan and spend hours to execute. As I continue on my journey to become a designer I hope to carry my love for graffiti art into the professional world of art and work to eliminate the misconceptions about this controversial and underground art form."
