Grieving the death of his wife, Livey, America's favorite author and humorist shuts himself up in his Fifth Avenue house. Family and friends try to console him, but Sam shuns company and abandons his writing. Only his daughter's cantankerous cat, Bambino, seems to understand Sam and his moods.
When the feisty cat disappears, a frantic Sam is determined to find him. He posts an announcement in the papers and even talks to reporters about his missing cat. In the process Sam discovers something much more powerful than grief: the will to live again.
